SODWANA

This song was written by Mark White when he first came to Sodwana in March 1991. He joined his friend Lance Goldman who was a dive instructor with Sodwana Dive Charters and also played in the Lodge bar 3 times a week.

Lance taught Mark how to dive (no mean feat considering he couldn't swim properly and couldn't dive to the bottom of the pool).

It tells the story of students learning to dive in Sodwana and was recorded  in Dave Abbott's studios in Jo'berg when Mark and Lance recorded their "Sodwana Time" Album.

The tapes were very popular in Sodwana and Margo sold lots of them. They were only R20 in those days.

TEA TIME

This is a tune written by Mark at the same time called "Tea Time" . It was played in what is called "Open Tuning"
For the main tune the guitar was tuned CGCGCD  and for the harmony it was tuned DADGAD

Sodwana - Words & Music M White Copyright - May 1991

Sitting on the beach - watching waves roll in
Soaking up the sun beside the water
The moment's drawing near - one last check of our gear
Then down towards the boat - the waiting water

We all help to launch the boat - we push until it floats
Then one by one we climb on from the water
As the skipper engages gear - and the students hide their fear
"What are we doing here - upon the water?"

In Sodwana - diving in the sea
In Sodwana - feel your spirits soaring free
In Sodwana - there's no concept of the time
Cos you're going to lose your mind - in Sodwana

Watch the skipper read the sea - from the graveyard we break free
It's so good to be - in open water
Belt, Fins, Tank and BC - Our mask then our DV
The count is 1-2-3 - back in the water

We're 15 metres down - we begin to fin around
A paradise is found - underwater
They're all living in the sea - please respect their liberty
Cos it's a privilege to be - underwater

In Sodwana - diving in the sea
In Sodwana - feel your spirits soaring free
In Sodwana - you're going to lose your mind
Cos you're on Sodwana Time - in Sodwana

Ooh Ooh Ooh - Ooh Ooh Ooh - In Sodwana
Ooh Ooh Ooh - Ooh Ooh Ooh - In Sodwana

You're in Sodwana

They Came After – Words & Music M White Copyright – August 1997

We’ll never know what she’d have seen
Never know what she’d have been – I wonder why.
She never said so very much
All we had one final touch and then goodbye.

They came after

She never saw what I could show
Never went where I could go – she never knew.

The things she did seemed strange to me

Not part of my reality – not what I do.

They came after - Mmm mmm mmm

Oh hoh hoh – oh hoh hoh hah hah

Had she understood a word I’d said
Still washed the clothes and made the bed – then it’s ok.
So proud we took her home by car
Yet seldom have I walked so far – not every day.

They came after

Instrumental

They came after

Oh hoh hoh – oh hoh hoh hah hah  - repeat

They came after - But what about before?

Then came the day they all arrived
But where were they when she’s still alive – I’m wondering
All alone she never saw,
500 after few before – I’m wondering.

They came after, They came after, They came after                                                                                  Back

WHERE FISH EAGLES FLY - Words & Music M White Copyright - August 1994

Beside the ocean - there we will be
You'll have to come here - then you will see
Cos we cannot tell you - though we may try
What it's like - where the fish eagles fly

It's like no place that you've ever been
The sights are amazing the best that you've seen
Once you have been here - you'll want to remain
You'll want to return again and again

Beside the ocean - there we will be
You'll have to come here - then you will see
Cos we cannot tell you - though we may try
What it's like - where the fish eagles fly

The sun beats down from the African sky
And you'll see those big birds fly
You'll hear them calling their sweet refrain
It'll keep you returning again and again

Cos beside the ocean - there we will be
You'll have to come here - then you will see
Cos we cannot tell you - though we may try
What it's like - where the fish eagles fly

Instrumental

The sound of the surf rolling in from the deep
Crickets are chirping as you're falling asleep
The frogs are all croaking from out of the night
The southern sky's stars shining bright

Beside the ocean - there we will be
You'll have to come here - then you will see
Cos we cannot tell you - though we may try
What it's like - where the fish eagles fly

What it's like - where the fish eagles fly                                                                                  Back
