On Sunday 28th January 1997 we celebrated the launch
of the Home Tiger's new kit with two games against
local teams intuthuko and Seabirds. We invited the local Induna Mr Mbuyazi
and councillor Mr Zikhali.
There was a short ceremony before the first game in which one of the
founding members of Home Tigers, Mr Andries Nxumalo, was presented with an
honoury Home Tigers number 11 shirt by Mark. The Induna Mr Mbuyazi also
made a short speech in which he thanked Greg and Mark and the Scuba Centre
for their continued support for the Home Tigers and local football. |
In keeping with our new youth policy our Home
Tiger's team was a very young one as were our opponents Intuthuko and
Seabirds.
The first game was Home Tigers v Intuthuko and it proved a very close
affair. Both teams were well matched and in truth there was little between
them and it was 0-0 at half time. Club captain Nico, who was not playing,
gave them a pep talk at half time and it seemed to do the trick as a wonderful cross from the right wing by our number 9 was headed home by
Mduduzi for the only goal of the game.
After a quick rest the next opponents were Seabirds. A lot of the players
stayed on the field and played two games in a row.
Again the teams were well matched and played remarkably attractive
football given the difficult conditions of the pitch.
It was 1-1 at half time which was a fair reflection of the game. In the
second half Mduduzi scored again to make it 2-1.
Unfortunately for the Home Tigers, Seabirds equalised although to be
honest, it was no more than they deserved.
So Home Tigers had successfully launched their new kit with a win and a
draw and we hope that they, and all their local opponents, continue to
play good football in a very good spirit. |

| We have been sponsoring one of the local football teams, the Home Tigers, since
1999. We started the relationship primarily due to the fact that a few of
the players from "Home Tigers" worked for us. As time went
on less of the team actually worked for us. One reason is that games are
always at the weekend and it is thus difficult for our employees to play.
But even if they didn't play, our employees actively supported the
"Home Tigers". |
| In 2004 things changed and many of the team worked for us in
one way or another. Mduduzi (Striker) and James (Coach) are on our Divemaster
project. And Fanaze (Striker) and Thulani (Midfield) both work on
the beach. |
| Last season we found that with games being
played as far away as Empangeni, there was no chance for our staff to play
at all as they would need the whole weekend off and that is our busiest
time. We discussed the situation with the players and coaching staff and
have decided to go back to our roots and play teams from Mbazwana. This
will mean that supporters will now now able to see more games and those
dive staff (not only who work for us but other companies in the area) will
once again be able to play. Unfortunately this means we have given up our
place in the higher league but we all feel it is the right thing to do.
To celebrate the "New" Home Tigers we have sponsored a new
team kit and have been able to buy football boots and footballs with the
money saved that used to be spent on taxis to get the players to the
games. |
